Roadtrip : IKEA (1 of 2)

So, I’ve been trying to find office furniture for my office. I’ve been throwing different ideas around and trying to pick out what style I want to go with. I finally found some stuff that I liked at IKEA. This one desk that I liked cost about $130 and I was excited that it was so inexpensive (compared to other things I like). I added it to my shopping cart and it was going to be over $400 to ship it!!! I just couldn’t believe it. I looked and the closest store was 470 miles away in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. That was not far enough to keep me away so when Elyse got home from work we jumped in the truck and went on our way.

On our way so far we’ve seen tons of big factories, the Kansas Speedway, and we went by Leavenworth. Tonight we are staying in Des Moines, Iowa (our first time ever!). Gas here is only $3.70 and Mid-Grade was $3.57…thats right, cheaper because they mix it with corn.

We also saw a Bridgestone Plant.

Tyson Brown - August 2, 2008 - 2:43 pm

Holy cow – did you get the desk? Or maybe you’re not even back from the trip yet…

Cole - August 2, 2008 - 3:54 pm

So… You’re not getting the Milk desk?

Danni - August 2, 2008 - 9:19 pm

IKEA is an awesome store but that is crazy that shipping is so expensive! Smart move driving a few hours to get it…I’m sure it will turn out to be a fun roadtrip and a nice desk :)

Madelyn - August 2, 2008 - 9:38 pm

Hope you REALLY like that desk.
But have fun on your adventure!!

elyse - August 3, 2008 - 12:40 pm

Yep, we got the desk and got back home (check out our new post)! We drove about 3 hours Fri night to Des Moines, then finished the rest of the 4 hours to Minneapolis Sat morning. Once we finished at IKEA, we made the 7 hour drive home and got back late last night.

Before we even finished reading this I said Chris will be in the Lego Store and sure enough – you can ask Jess. That would be a blast. Jess just wants to go to that mall. In Canada they have this show called Red Green and he shows you how to repair and make things with duct tape(Canadian humor)you need to send in the truck with the blue and orange tape. At work they were talking to us about the windmills and solar panels to generate power. I think it would be wonderful however, the studies show if we depended completely on both of those sources to build them for what would be needed would take 25 years to pay for. They need to work on a solution that would get us on that path but so people can afford it.

Hi, any one going to Ikea? I have a couple of shelves and a sm table about $120 and yes they want $300! for shipping, crazy?

I would love to find someone to pitch in on the travel costs and a bit more for their shopping time.

gail - January 7, 2009 - 6:54 pm

Forgot to let you know I live in Lawrence

Roadtrip : Baldwin City

Today we took a drive and got to see some nice countryside of Kansas.

We headed to Baldwin City to look at some computer racks for the office. We saw lots of corn fields, a bunch of silos, and a few water towers. It’s neat because Lawrence is a pretty populated area (a college town, similar to Gainesville), but once you get to the edge of town you’re in the country.

Chris thought this little police station in Baldwin City was funny.

Pretty scenery in the residential downtown of Baldwin City. It had some old houses, brick streets, and these pretty overhanging trees.

Bob and Joy - August 1, 2008 - 8:54 pm

Sounds like you are having fun getting to visit all the new surrondings, and spruce up your place. We enjoy seeing the pics and reading about your adventures in your new home. I think the weather fronts out there required they invent the word “Ominous”.
Hope to visit one day….
Cole has his travel all arranged and is looking forward to the trip out to visit… He will have to be our representative for now.

Danni - August 1, 2008 - 9:44 pm

Those are pretty pictures of Baldwin and a cool vintage police station–I wonder what the inside looks like..?

Elaine - August 9, 2008 - 4:07 pm

I have an aunt and uncle and 2 cousins that live in Des Moines. You could have stopped and said hi from me…We also went to the Mall of America and spent the day there! Do you recall if they still had a “Norway” store? Jayson did the roller coaster.
Was a long time ago. Looks like a nice road trip! Love your pics!

While I’m dealing with my tooth problems I decided to share a few pictures with everyone. This first one is from our balcony as the sun was setting. I noticed that the windows were glowing orange and when I went to see what it was it was a great sunset.

This is just a picture of a rose that I got Elyse for when she came home from work one day to have lunch with me.

Danni - July 28, 2008 - 9:14 pm

That is a pretty sunset and a thoughtful rose…I bet you had a great lunch ;)

Danni - July 28, 2008 - 9:26 pm

Oh yeah, sorry to hear about your pain…Toothaches are so painful and can really effect your aura :( We hope you start feeling better soon.

Julia - July 29, 2008 - 9:48 pm

that’s awesome Elyse can come home to eat lunch!

Storm Chasers

Our weather alert radio went off a few times yesterday. We checked online to see where the storms were and they were headed right for us! Since we love storms we decided to jump in the truck and go get some pictures of Kansas weather!

This is a very “Kansas” picture of a corn field as the storm rolled in. You could even see baby ears of corn growing on the stalks.

Ominous clouds!

Some more of the storm chasers! Finally the lightning was getting too close for comfort, so we jumped back in the truck after this shot!

When we got home, we got this picture just outside of our garage. We tried for a long time to get a lightning picture and it finally happened. It was so bright and the lightning was thick.

Danni & Luke - July 27, 2008 - 6:22 pm

Woh! Awesome Picture! That’s exactly what happens when Luke flexes his triceps! It’s like BAM!…and then it’s over!

Cheryl - July 27, 2008 - 8:33 pm

Next time you go storm chasing please wear those red shoes like Dorothy had, so you can click your heels together to get back home in case you blow away. They probably have steel toed ones at the local Kansas Wal-Mart! Love you, Mom.

Tyson Brown - July 30, 2008 - 7:12 pm

Oh my goodness!!! Those are some awesome pics! That lightning bolt is really close…

Madelyn - August 2, 2008 - 9:43 pm

Great pics! BUT BE CAREFUL!! I might just see you flying by in a strom cloud.
That’s the hard way to get back to Florida!

Our Living Room

Well, we’ve been working on getting everything organized in our new place. The living room is officially presentable now, so take a look.

Here’s the before picture:

And after:

Chris had a neat idea of using my snowboard (which usually stays in its case in the closet) as a decorative item in our living room. He ordered a special piece to mount it to the wall. If we ever go snowboarding I’ll just lift it off the bracket and go! He had another creative idea of using the graphics from my snowboard as art in one of our new picture frames. So, he redrew the graphics on his computer and printed it!

We also love our new couch! It is so great because it is 5 separate pieces that are finished on all sides, so we could litterally put one piece in every corner of the room. It is so versitile and we have already rearranged it about 10 different ways in the past 2 weeks!

Jessica - July 26, 2008 - 8:26 pm

The living room looks nice. I like the snowboard on the wall–very creative!

Danni & Luke - July 26, 2008 - 10:59 pm

A unique spin with the snowboard on the wall-Awesome! Looks Great!

adrienne - July 27, 2008 - 1:56 pm

it looks just like you!!

Sweet living room!

After Dinner Walk

After dinner we decided to go on a walk around our neighborhood just to check things out and have a good time. Our first stop was a photo shoot for me! Notice the lovely bedhead that I sported all day.

On our way home from some of our recent shopping excursions we have noticed some deer hanging out in this field just down from our townhouse. One day there were about 10 deer and 6 of them were good size bucks. So, we decided to walk down there but there were only 3 of them and only one was a small buck.

Later in our walk I caught Elyse trying to get a little too close to a construction site (it’s a walmart). I quickly told her to get down before someone called the cops.

Miss Deedee - July 24, 2008 - 11:06 pm

Hey Chris & Elyse-LOVE your pictures & getting a glimpse into your new adventure in Kansas! That deer seems to be enjoying the photo opportunity…Love you! Deedee

Danni & Luke - July 25, 2008 - 9:14 pm

Nice photo shoot Chris-Lots of personality! Elyse, does the sign need to say HIGH VOLTAGE to convince you not to jump over…:) I like how the header pic is changing sometimes, keeps me on my toes ( not really, but kinda—I swear I’m not crazy)

Mom - July 26, 2008 - 10:17 am

Is that the camoflauge yellow Chris wore to take wildlife shots? (Actually, deer see blue the best) Hmmm. Love you p.s. what’s the fruit?

Jessica - July 26, 2008 - 8:29 pm

bro–whats with the hair–seriously a brush will fix that–lol–love ya.

chris - July 26, 2008 - 8:50 pm

We weren’t sure what kind of fruit that is. We were hoping that you could tell us.

JDos - August 11, 2008 - 8:22 pm

Hahaha, you guys are too much!! Miss you both!

Thanks for posting the pictures of baby “Link” – he is really beautiful! We hope to see you soon!

Jessica - July 26, 2008 - 8:33 pm

Link is adorable! They look very happy. I guess you should get used to the Aunt and Uncle title since you will have a niece and nephew before the year is over. Congrats!

Nancy - August 10, 2008 - 9:06 pm

What a perfect baby-but of course look at this mom & dad. However, I read that in this case Link inherited his good looks, charm & sense of humor from his Aunt Elyse & Uncle Chris.

JDos - August 11, 2008 - 8:24 pm

Wow, Aunt Elyse and Uncle Chris! Congrats guys!!
