  • Welcome to our Blog!

We are so excited to have you visit our blog.

We decided that keeping a blog would be the best way for us to keep our friends and family updated on what we have been up to since we moved from Florida to Lawrence, Kansas.

We like knowing that you visited our site, so please leave some comments. Thanks so much for stopping by; we hope you enjoy the stories and pictures.

Poly: As a prefix, often meaning more than one or many

We finally got our dressers polyurethaned! These dressers belonged to my dad when we was a kid and were passed on to me. My neighbor back home painted them black for us before we moved and we recently poly’d them. Pictures of them in our house to come.

We also got another home project done…picking out some pictures for our new frames. We got a bunch of black frames that we registered for from our wedding, and we printed mostly wedding pictures to put in them. For now, they’re on display in our hall, but we might hang them up at some point (but they look kind of neat there.)

Diane Horgan - September 9, 2008 - 8:28 pm

Elyse, I love your idea of all of the photo frames! I bet your wedding was amazing and it looks like you and Chris are having a great time in Kansas! :) P.S. The Master’s is definitely time consuming! Miss ya.

September Seventh

This afternoon Elyse and I went on a bike ride. I had promised her yesterday that we would, so I decided to keep my word so we went! It was really fun. We went a different way than we had been before. We went down a dirt road and we got going really fast.

Here I am after our bike ride. When we got back I decided to clean Elyse’s car. We cleaned the car and the rims. Waxed the front and put RainX on the windows. We haven’t cleaned her car since we lived here so it really need it.

Here is my honey collecting all of the rags to clean them for next time. Gotta love micro-fiber!

Anyways, Elyse made us lasagna tonite and we’re about to watch a movie…bye!

Cheryl - September 8, 2008 - 11:33 am

That truck back there looks like it’s next in line once honey gets those rags washed. Lasagna sounds yummy!! Love you, Mom

The Office

Here are the long awaited pictures of Chris’ office. The white desk is the one that we got on our road trip to Minesota:

It took a few days to get the desk assembled and set up with computers and all.

Chris also has some nice black, metal racks in the office to hold our printer and the server:

Here’s our file cabinet and a plotter:

Cole - September 8, 2008 - 7:13 pm

Needs more cowbell… and more monitors. You’re still at a sub 2:1 monitor to computer ratio.

chris - September 9, 2008 - 2:12 am

My ratio was doing fine until I traded you 6 for 1. But I’m happy I got to clean up a bit.

Loren - October 9, 2008 - 7:41 pm

So Chris said I had to comment to be official. Here is my comment, The Mountain Dew Giant Sticker (vinyl) stood out to me.

It was good to have you!

On Tuesday morning, my parents came by Schlumberger to see my office and I gave them a tour of the plant. I was glad they got to see where I work! Here we are with our safety glasses:

It was great to have you visit, Mom and Dad! Thanks for coming our to see our new place and hang out!

Uncle Bobby - September 3, 2008 - 10:39 pm

As an experienced engineer, I must point out that those “Safety Glasses” are considered “Less-than-effective” when worn in the manner shown in the photo. :)

Great posts with lots of fun info and pictures…. Thanks from our family as we enjoy the updates.

Cheryl - September 4, 2008 - 3:13 pm

The REAL trick is trying to see while REALLY wearing them b/c your glasses won’t fit underneath them; quite complicated being a visitor.

elyse - September 5, 2008 - 5:33 pm

Oh, sorry! I didn’t even think about that.

Dad - September 7, 2008 - 12:07 pm

We had a great time with you! Thank your boss for letting us tour!

I’ve never seen THAT deer before!

We started our Labor Day by getting some Kansas City barbecue at Famous Dave’s. We shared a Half Feast. Check it out:

Mom spotted this “Greetings from Kansas City, KS” postcard for us to get our picture by:

Of course we were in Kansas City to go to Cabela’s, and we got our  picture by the famous Cabela’s statue…

And here we are out front… we thought about leaving after we got those pictures, but decided to go ahead in. lol

They have some awesome taxadermy displays. Here are some pics Dad took of the safari animals:

And the more “Western” animals:

We made sure to get back to Lawrence in time to go back out looking for deer. We headed down the Scenic River Road again…

No one should come to Kansas without getting their picture by corn!

That night we saw more deer. The one on the bottom right is a fawn. It came by a field that had a horse, a tiny pony, and two llammas. The pony got crazy and ran right underneath the horse (between it’s legs) and tried to knock a llamma over, which in turn sat on the pony.

So tonight we were better prepared to see deer at night. We used these three Q-beams, the biggest of which was 5,000,000 candlelight and came from Cabela’s.

Cheryl - September 4, 2008 - 3:29 pm

The “postcard” picture came out great!!! Maybe it could be your Christmas card! Oh wait, I just reviewed it and there’s no sunflower in it……..so sad. Are you going to say how many deer we saw, so that there can be an official deer siting record which is ongoing among guests. Ours probably won’t get broken in nearly forever!!! I don’t want to say b/c I know Chris kept a tally on the sun visor and has it EXACTLY! Cabela’s definitely has the best Mule Deer taxidermy; they have an entire room of deer shown in about 5 or 6 different habitats. Thanks for taking us there. Fun Spot! Love you, Mom

Grandma - September 5, 2008 - 9:44 am

Hi, yous guys (I learned tha’s the midwestern title for ….from my Iowa cousins who (in the old days of my younger life) used to come to Florida and teach us better ways of communicating.

Since my salutation was overdone, I’ll shorten up my message so you’ve time to read the whole thing.

Your Mom and I just viewed your new pictures. I told her Frank’s favorite catalog was Cabela’s. I occasionally tried to discard a few to his in spite of his protestations. They are addictive to some guys.

The garbage can lid feast sounds like great fun (and how wonderful that is for gettin’ your fill…of food).

Cheryl’s reading my letter now. She likes briefness, you know…so I gotta go!

I still miss you two. I’m so glad you’re having new experiences and some day, if not now, you’ll very fondly recall these “memories”. Keep well and happy. I pray God’s best always for you.

With love, Grammie

elyse - September 5, 2008 - 8:11 pm

Oh, yes. Thank you for mentioning that. We saw 28 deer that evening.

Dad - September 7, 2008 - 12:12 pm

Famous Dave’s was great Bar-B-Que! It was a great feast! Cabelas’ was good too. We didn’t have enough time … but there’s next time.

kurt - September 15, 2008 - 5:40 pm

Looks like you guys have been busy! The Pics are good- I love you. Dad

Tour of the Town

Sunday after church we took Mom and Dad on a tour of Lawrence, starting with the University of Kansas.

Below is the Jayhawk’s football stadium:

This is their practice field. We were inpressed with the coaches’ tower in the middle… And Chris was impressed with the grass.

More walking around campus:

Next we went downtown and walked by the Kansas River:

We also drove to the lake and apparently took the pictures below, but I didn’t know because I fell asleep in the car ride to the lake.

That night we drove around looking for deer, because that is one of my parent’s favorite past times, but it was just too dark with only our MagLites. Little did the deer know that we would be back and better prepared the next night…

Guest Post: Cheryl+Dennis

We all arrived at the Kansas City airport at the same time.  Elyse and Chris from Houston and us from Tampa.  As you can see, we were all fleeing to Kansas for safety from Hurrican Gustav.  Their apartment is really looking great!

We celebrated Elyse’s 22 birthday, which was August 26.  We did cake and presents on the porch in the Florida Gators wedding chairs that Circle of Friends got for them.  Elyse got a little carried away with the chomp b/c the Gators just smashed Hawaii 56 – 10 in their season opener. I guess their subscription to ESPN Game Plan was worth it! (We also got to watch Auburn beat the U of Louisiana Monroe 34 -0).

War Eagle Cole!  Here’s proof that your card and presents were delivered; Elyse read your card out loud and then she lol so much that she didn’t have breath to blow out those candles!  Where is a famous Kansas tornado when you need one?!

Our official Kansas residents(see new car tag) still have their hearts in FL, esp. on game day.

We took a ride around Lawrence in between football games and of course we hit Elyse’s work first

Our ride took us out to the park where we had seen quite a few deer when here looking for housing in March.  Us girls had some funky “riding in the back of the truck” hair, hence the matching hats.  Mine even had quite a persistent butterfly visitor!  We saw lots of trees with this strange fruit on them.  The ranger said it was a bois d’arc or osage orange tree and not edible.  Elyse appears not to have believed him!

The lovebirds in Kansas.

The other lovebirds in Kansas with their Kansas guide.

I always wanted a picture of Elyse and Chris with the Kansas sunflowers.  This was just perfect!    Then, it seems that Chris dropped Elyse in the cold lake  and apparently is making her ride in the back of the truck until she dries off!   Well….what happens in Kansas, stays in Kansas!   Hmmmm.     Got to go for a game of Fast Uno.

Uncle Bobby - August 30, 2008 - 11:53 pm

Nice post…. more pictures of the “couple” than normal :)

Pizza and a movie with Cole and our bunch was the start of our holiday weekend.

Cheryl - August 31, 2008 - 4:55 pm

Hey Guys,

I’m playing fast uno again and listening to Dad’s ruling on starting with a reverse. We took a ride this afternoon to scope out deer siting spots for tonight. Love you much, Mom/Gramma

Elyse and the “Kansas” gang

Rock Chalk, Jayhawk

Chris and I flew in to Kansas City yesterday evening and my parents had a flight that came in right around the time ours did. It is so good to have them here visiting! Our luggage got lost and the airport brought it to our house at 4:30 in the morning! We went to the grocery store to pick up some necessities (like coffee) and met these University of Kansas (KU) mascots:

They were very funny and friendly and even did a special dance for us. Then we got our picture with them. The one on the right is Big Jay and the one on the left is Baby Jay. Rock Chalk, Jayhawk!

Cheryl - September 3, 2008 - 10:55 am

KU does have friendly, cute mascots, BUT AUBIE is waaayyyyyyy, I mean way better!!!!! WAR EAGLE!! Love, Mom
